Homes for Homes grants $200,000 to ACT social housing projects

Homes for Homes has recently granted $200,000 to support social and affordable housing projects in the Australian Capital Territory, as part of the eighth grant round of Homes for Homes funding. Congratulations to the successful projects:

  • $100,000 to YWCA Canberra to purchase a new two-bedroom unit to serve as a safe home for older women and women with or without children at risk of experiencing homelessness.
  • $100,000 to Community Housing Canberra (CHC) for the construction of a single dwelling in Wanniassa.

Grant recipients were awarded their funding at the 10-year celebration of partner Denman Prospect, Australia’s first Homes for Homes suburb. Every home in Denman Prospect is registered with Homes for Homes and helps raise funds for social and affordable housing in Canberra. To date, more than $1.3 million has been raised by Denman Prospect to support community housing projects across the ACT, providing safe housing for 53 people.

Steven Persson, CEO of Homes for Homes, noted the increasing potential of the initiative as more homes are built and sold in the region.

“With the rise in home construction and sales in the ACT, the funds raised through Homes for Homes are expected to grow exponentially over the next decade,” said Mr Persson. “Our ambition is to be the largest provider of social and affordable housing funding behind governments. Increasing the supply of social and affordable housing in Canberra is critical to achieving that goal.”

Frances Crimmins, CEO of YWCA Canberra, said: “We’re delighted to receive this funding for a second time. It will directly support our work to expand our housing portfolio for women and children escaping violence.”

Nathan Dal Bon, CEO of CHC, said: “We’re very pleased to receive this financial support from Homes for Homes. As a community housing provider, partnerships like this are essential to making subsidised housing viable.”

This funding is part of a grant round that will also deliver funds to community housing providers in Tasmania, Western Australia and the City of Casey in Victoria. Successful recipients will be announced throughout the rest of the year.
