One Home, Many Doors Opened
Homes for Homes exists to help turn housing into a foundation for lasting change. And for one Northern Territory family of four, that change is already taking shape.
With the support of our partners and donors, the family has moved into a home that is more comfortable and, importantly, far safer than their previous accommodation. There’s a garden, each child has their own bedroom, and the family can remain close to relatives and friends while building new connections in their neighbourhood.
The move has opened other doors, too. Being closer to employment opportunities has helped both parents secure ongoing, full-time work.
It’s the kind of outcome that goes well beyond four walls: greater safety, stability and opportunity today, with the potential to create lasting, generational change for families and communities.
Across Australia, rising housing and living costs are placing increasing pressure on household budgets. The latest research shows more than one in seven Australians are living below the poverty line, including one in six children.
While poverty climbs, more people are pushed into homelessness. The lack of income to survive the private housing market, and the shortage of affordable housing in our communities create a system where people are kept in homelessness and poverty. Long-term, sustainable solutions of social and affordable housing are essential to break this cycle and ensure everyone has a place to call home.
With the Northern Territory experiencing the highest rate of homelessness in Australia, every affordable housing property is critical to making a difference in the lives of those who are experiencing homelessness or severe housing stress.
With support from our community of donors and philanthropic partners PEXA, Homes for Homes granted $70,000 to Northern Territory community housing provider Venture Housing Company to purchase a three-bedroom property and convert it from a private rental into long-term affordable housing for a household experiencing housing stress.
The purchase of the property has provided a long-term home for the family with rent set at no more than 60% of market rent. This project is one example of the social and affordable housing Homes for Homes has helped fund across Australia.
By bringing together donors, the property industry, philanthropic partners and community housing providers, Homes for Homes helps turn collective support into more safe, secure and affordable homes for people who need them most.
Immediate assistance remains essential for people experiencing homelessness and poverty. But lasting change also requires long-term housing solutions. For this family, one affordable home has meant greater safety, space for their children, connection to community and new employment opportunities. It demonstrates what a secure home can provide: not simply a roof overhead, but a stronger foundation for the future.
